Where 18th Street meets Burnett Avenue sits a small, white building called Hoggatt School. This one-room school house, atop a sturdy stone foundation and wearing a crisp layer of white paint, did not always live on Burnett Avenue. In fact, for over 80 years, Hoggatt School lay disassembled and forgotten in a basement on Third Street.
Hoggatt School, Ames very first school, is one of only four one-room school house museums in Story County. Reconstructed and furnished with great care for historical accuracy, this school house packs a lot of educational punch. Learn about how the first teacher, 22-year old Sarah Jane Emery, managed to teach a dozen students in five different grades, try your hand at calligraphy on an authentic slate board and hear stories about surviving Iowa's winter weather in a tiny room with no electricity or running water.
